Slavín Tomb is a part of the Cemetery of Vyšehrad, you can find it in its east part. More than 600 important personalities of Czech national culture have been buried in Vyšehrad so far. At the end of 1880’s an idea was born to establish a pantheon – a place to bury excellent Czech personalities. Slavín is formed by a crypt on the level of the cemetery terrain covered by a platform, which can be reached using a wide granite staircase with a balustrade railing. In the centre of the platform there is a monument with a sarcophagus. Above the sarcophagus there is an allegoric figure of “Genius Loci”. By 2006 55 personalities had been buried in Slavín – thus there was the last unoccupied burial vault in 2011, which could contain up to 8 urns. But the custodian of Slavín did not intend to put any other urns there. In November and December 2011, within the Advent period, the tomb vault, which otherwise only the bereaved can enter, was opened to public after almost 65 years.
