Žižkov is a quarter situated east from the city centre. Žižkov, a bohemian quarter full of nightlife, cafés, bars and artists, lies on a natural elevation, therefore local streets are narrow and steep. Žižkov also includes Vítkov Hill, which offers the most beautiful view of Prague 3, and a new development strip towards Hrdlořezy. Žižkov, which is sometimes called Montmartre of Prague, is a quarter of block of flats. For reasons that might not be very obvious, Žižkov earned a reputation of a workers’ quarter, which is ill-deserved because it was rather Karlín, Smíchov and Libeň that were the workers’ quarters of Prague. However, during socialism the idea of a workers’ quarter became quite popular although in Žižkov lived a lot of millionaires. Those who fulfilled the ideological idea were the women of Žižkov, who, as an organized unit, never missed the 1 May Celebration from 1950’s to the downfall of socialism.
