In the past when there was fortification around the Old Town of Prague there was one of its gates at this place. Later, it was renamed the Mountain Gate as an important trade way to Kutná hora started there. The construction of a new gate started in 1475, and since the 18th century the tower was used as a gunpowder storeroom.
It was opened to public in 2013. It is 65 metres tall and you must climb 186 stairs to get up there.
It is a late Gothic construction and is considered a symbol of Prague. It is the starting point of the Royal Route, which leads up to Prague Castle and which the coronation parades of Bohemian kings took to get to Prague Castle.
