Vyšehrad is an ancient fortified settlement and fortress on a rock above the right bank of the Vltava River in Vyšehrad Quarter, Prague. Important Czech personalities were buried in the Cemetery of Vyšehrad with Slavín by the Church of Saint Peter and Paul, there is also the oldest rotunda of Prague called St. Martin’s Rotunda. Since 1962 the compound of Vyšehrad has been a national cultural monument. Vyšehrad is associated with a number of legends dating back to the very beginning of Czech history. It is said to have been founded by legendary Prince Krok. But the fortified settlement actually originated in the second half of the 10th century. At the end of the 11th century it was the seat of the first Czech King Vratislaus II of Bohemia, who founded the Chapter of Vyšehrad. The northern, western and southern slopes of the hill are very steep. The peak of the rock offers a beautiful view of Prague and the Vltava River, it is one of the prettiest natural lookout points in Prague.
